Righteousness

The Sermon on the Mount has been called the greatest sermon ever preached. It is technically perfect. Each beatitude overflows with truth and becomes the basis of how the sermon develops.

In verse 6 we read “blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled.”

Once again Jesus is addressing people who struggle. In my lifetime I have heard folk say, “I wish I felt normal.” Sometimes it is the cry of addicts. Sometimes it is the despair of men and women who are hopelessly in debt.

Righteousness is God’s “normal.” A righteous tree gives fruit, provides shade and shelter from the storm. That’s what a tree is supposed to do. A righteous road will get you where you want to go.

A righteous man or woman was created to bring glory to God and enjoy Him forever. Recently my wife’s sister turned 50. Elizabeth filmed a birthday greeting with this message.

“Shona, you are the daughter your father always wanted. If he were alive today he would be so proud of you and everything that you have achieved in your life.”

That’s what you have with God.

The next time you look in the mirror remember these words. This is how God wants to do life. He is building a kingdom and He has chosen you to live it.

The world “blessed” is a powerful way to describe a position of privilege. It is better translated “fortunate.” Start there. Start with God. Life may be difficult at the moment. But it will not stay that way.

You have a Father in heaven who is willing to put a roof over your head and food on the table. More than that. You have a God who takes delight in you.
